In the grounds of the National Maritime Museum, in Greenwich, I spotted this grey squirrel rifling through the autumn leaves. I was delighted that my photos captured the squirrel picking up a sycamore “helicopter”. We also have a family of greys nesting in a tree at the bottom of our garden and although people find them less endearing than the red or black squirrels, they’re still very entertaining to watch. I’ve recreated this fella with thousands of tiny stippled dots of ink, spacing them out or layering them up to create the depth and texture of the hairs and finally stippling in the golden-brown hues of the helicopter with acrylic ink.
